A man has died following a road accident in Co Louth on Sunday night.

Gardaí are investigating after the man in his 50s was fatally injured when his car hit a tree.

The man is understood to be a foreign national.

The accident took place at around 5.30pm on Sunday.

"A man in his 50s was fatally injured when his car left the road and struck a tree," a Garda spokesman said.

"There was no other vehicle involved and the man was alone in the car at the time of the crash."

Local councillor Jim Tenanty said that it was the second tragic crash in the area in recent weeks.

A young man was killed in a crash a fortnight ago just outside Ardee.

"It is devastating to have two such tragedies in the same area in such a short space of time," Mr Tenanty said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this man at this time."
