A 26-year-old man from Omagh was killed in a head-on collision as he returned home from Dublin Airport.

The incident, involving two cars, happened on the N2 Dublin to Derry Road at Drummond Otra in Co Monaghan at 7.15am yesterday morning.

The driver of the car, who was the only occupant of a Ford Fiesta, was fatally injured when his vehicle collided with an Audi Estate. His body was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for a post-mortem examination.

Two foreign nationals, living in Ballybay, Co Monaghan, were taken from the Audi and rushed to hospital. Their conditions are not life-threatening.

The Dundalk exit off the N2 at Carrickmacross was closed for examination.

Local councillor Padraig McNally said he was alarmed by the number of fatalities on the section of the N2 road. "There have been 10 deaths in the past three years. Something needs to be done," he said.
