Downpours and cold won't put a damper on festival weekend

Edel O'Connell

WE may be only halfway through summer but you'd be forgiven for thinking it was already over.

Heavy downpours and disappointing temperatures are on the cards again this weekend.

And the bad news is that there is no end in sight to the unsettled conditions.

Met Eireann forecasters are predicting a washout weekend with the south of the country worst affected.

With festival season officially under way, thousands of revellers travelling to the Body and Soul Festival in Co Westmeath and the Westport Festival in Co Mayo are being advised to pack their rain gear rather than sun cream.

A band of heavy rain across the northeast and east is expected to clear up later today leaving a few scattered showers in most places, but it will remain breezy with westerly winds making it feel quite chilly.

Temperatures will remain in the low teens throughout the weekend ranging from an unseasonal 10C to 16C -- well below averages for this time of year.
