Doonican and Bowyer given freedom of city

SHOWBAND singer Brendan Bowyer and BBC star Val Doonican are to be given the freedom of Waterford.

The City Hall ceremony will be held on Friday June 17, and the Mayor of Waterford Cllr Mary Roche will confer both men with the freedom of the city.

"We are honouring Brendan and Val in order to convey the appreciation of the city for the unique contribution made by both to the musical, cultural and social life of the city," said a City Council spokesperson.

"Brendan and Val have had long and distinguished careers and have been outstanding ambassadors for Waterford."

Bowyer comes from South Parade in Waterford and Doonican hails from the city's Alphonsus Road area.
