Doctors must state termination is 'only option'
THE forms that obstetricians and psychiatrists will have to fill out for each pregnancy termination are blunt and to the point, with doctors having to state it was the only procedure that could avert risk to the life of the woman.
The forms, which will be completed and sent to Health Minister James Reilly, have to be signed by the doctors involved when a termination takes place due to physical risk or risk of suicide.
The doctors will have to sign a form saying that in their "reasonable opinion" the risk could only be averted by a termination.
The woman's name, date of birth and address will be part of the information which must be filled in, but will not be made public when the minister provides statistics on terminations carried out under the law at the end of each year. The gestational age of the foetus must also be detailed.
