Divers search riverbed after car plunges in

NAVY divers are searching a riverbed after a car was seen plunging into the water.

A sonar sweep is also under way to locate the car which hit the water on the River Lee at high tide at a marina near Pairc Ui Chaoimh, in Cork city.

Emergency crews, gardai and the Coast Guard were involved in the operation. It is believed a woman was alone in the car when it apparently went into the water at high speed.

The alert was raised at about 5pm with Naval divers joining the search at about 7.30pm.

Visibility was said to be very bad in the dark and murky waters, with one source describing searching conditions as very difficult.
