GARDAI are investigating the discovery of a viable explosive placed under a car in a Dublin suburb.

A number of householders were evacuated from their homes in the Glenshane area of Jobstown, Tallaght, south Dublin last night after a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found under a car in a private residence in the area.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to the scene at 9.25pm and a number of local houses were evacuated. A cordon was set up and traffic restrictions were put in place as the team made safe the device without the need for a controlled explosion.

The device was taken to a military location for a technical exam in which it was established that the device was a viable explosive.

Residents returned to their homes around 10.15pm when the area was declared safe.

Gardai are continuing their investigation into the incident.
