Depp's gangster role

JOHNNY Depp is to play the infamous Irish-American gangster Whitey Bulger in his latest film project.

He will play the notorious Boston criminal in the upcoming thriller 'Black Mass', directed by renowned film-maker Barry Levinson of 'Rain Man' fame. Eighty-three-year-old Bulger faces trial in connection with 19 counts of murder.

Prelate's funeral Mass

TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore was among the mourners who paid their last respects to the former Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Joseph Cassidy, who passed away at the age of 79.

Mr Gilmore was among up to 1,000 mourners who packed the Cathedral of the Assumption in Tuam on Saturday for his Requiem Mass. More than 70 priests and eight bishops also attended the Mass.

House charge shortfall

ALMOST half-a-million properties still haven't registered to pay the controversial €100 household charge.

The failure by 470,000 households to pay up means the Exchequer is losing out on €47m in tax revenues. Environment Minister Phil Hogan confirmed that 1,125,222 households have paid the charge out of an estimated 1,620,814 properties that are liable. An additional 22,954 or 2pc of homes have obtained a waiver.

Reilly under attack

SURVIVORS of the Thalidomide scandal have lashed out at Health Minister James Reilly for allegedly cutting their entitlement to compensation.

The Irish Thalidomide Association claims Dr Reilly has failed to honour his election promise to provide compensation and long-term care for victims.
