Dental benefit 'confusion' blamed for low uptake
FEWER than one in five people who are entitled to a free dental check-up availed of the benefit last year, writes Eilish O'Regan.
The dental exam, which does not include any treatment, is free to around 3.3 million adults under state schemes.
However, last year less than 600,000 of them availed of the offer, figures obtained by the Irish Dental Association show.
Dentist Peter Gannon suggested the main reason for the low uptake was "confusion and lack of clarity amongst patients".
The free exam is now the only free benefit available to people covered by PRSI after cutbacks.
