Dense fog and frosty patches have led to poor driving conditions for commuters across the country this morning.

Last night, Met Eireann issued a Status Orange weather alert warning of heavy fog.

"This morning, there is a good bit of fog around," Met Eireann forecaster Evelyn Cusack told Independent.ie.

"We've had a good bit of rain for the last two days. It's typical Autumun weather.

"You get fog when there are clear skies and light winds, and the moisture comes off the ground and becomes fog.

"It can be quite dangerous so we're advising motorists to watch out and take care as there is dense fog with poor visibility," she said.

Those coming from rural areas are being warned that they could hit frosty patches.

"But things will improve and it will become sunny for the rest of the day," she said.

The fog is expected last throughout the morning.

The Orange Status weather alert is in place until midday.

Rural spots, could meet a frosty patch but it will improve and become sunny for the rest of the day
