Dempsey calls for reform of electoral system
A SENIOR government minister has called for the radical, urgent reform of the electoral system to return Dail Eireann to a central place in public thinking.
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey told the MacGill Summer School that under the present system the major focus of politicians after getting elected was on how to get re-elected.
This had inevitably led to too much time being spent on local issues and serving the needs of individual constituents instead of fulfilling the role of a national parliamentarians, he said.
"Of course it is important to represent individual clients. . . but the national good has to be served and that means that public representatives should not be distracted from the national function by constant clientelism," he added.
