Delaney rolls out red carpet for hurlers
ONE good turn deserves another.
Up to 17 members of the All-Ireland-winning Kilkenny senior hurling team will be special guests of FAI chief executive John Delaney at tomorrow's football match against Austria.
The Cats will watch the crucial World Cup qualifier from pitch side at the Aviva Stadium after Mr Delaney was invited to be pictured with the Liam MacCarthy Cup last month.
And Mr Delaney was as good as his word after he promised Paul Murphy, Tommy Walsh and captain Eoin Larkin tickets for a game following the photograph.
"It was a personal invite. They wanted John to come down and take a picture with the MacCarthy Cup," an FAI spokesperson explained.
Following the picture, Mr Delaney promised the players that they could come to a match of their choice in Lansdowne.
"It was just the three of them at first but it grew from there," the spokesman added. It is understood that as many as 17 of the squad have been invited.
Mr Delaney has held a long appreciation for the GAA and he played hurling for Arravale Rovers when at school in Abbey CBS in Thurles.
