Decision day looms for dissident Fine Gaelers

THE second week in July will be the crucial date for Fine Gael TDs planning to vote against the abortion legislation.

Three Fine Gael TDs will almost definitely vote against the bill. Another dozen are still expressing strong concerns and there is speculation some will lose the party whip by opposing the bill.

The Dail will sit four days a week to allow enough time for the legislation to be debated, with the vote expected to take place between July 9 and July 11.

Meanwhile, an Independent TD has published an abusive email he received making offensive comments about him, Labour Party junior minister Kathleen Lynch, Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams and Independent TD Luke 'Ming' Flanagan.

An email was sent to Waterford TD John Halligan warning him "his days are numbered" and he should "check under his car". The email followed Mr Halligan's comments in the Dail this week in which he criticised the Catholic Church for attempting to interfere in the running of the State.

"I will be reporting this latest threat towards me to gardai but it will in no way affect my stance on the issue," he said.
