Debaters talk up a storm for top title
Talk will be far from cheap this week as 600 international debaters battle it out for a European title, writes Brian McDonald.
Over the next six days, debaters from more than 140 institutions go head to head for the title of European Universities Debating Champion.
The Euros championships are being jointly hosted by NUI Galway's literary and debating society and the university's law society for the first time and joining the competitors from across Europe will be speakers from Qatar and Israel.
Nine rounds of competition will be held over the next four days and the semi-finals and final will take place at the weekend, with the new European champion being crowned at Galway's Radisson Blu Hotel on Sunday.
"Our aim is to create an efficient and enjoyable Euros. Galway always strives to create the right balance between well-run competition and the best of craic," convener Nollaig O Scanlain said.
