THE death of 8-year-old schoolboy Anthony Ward in the north Cork town of Charleville is being treated today as a ‘‘tragic incident’’ by investigating gardai.
The boy was discovered unresponsive at his home at Harrison Place, on the outskirts of the town near the Cork-Limerick border, early this morning.
Despite frantic efforts to stabilise his condition by the emergency services, he was pronounced dead before he could be rushed to hospital.
"It is desperate - everyone here is absolutely stunned. We just couldn't believe it when we heard," one neighbor said.
The body of the child remains at scene.
His distraught mother Diane, 43, years has been taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
The scene has been sealed off by gardai, who were awaiting the attendance of the State Pathologist.
The post mortem examination expected to be carried out at Cork University Hospital (CUH) later this evening.
