Death of father and only child, 5, in blaze leaves town in shock
The father and daughter who died in a house fire in Tralee, Co Kerry, in the early hours of yesterday have been named as Anthony O'Brien and five-year-old Nadine.
Family and friends were yesterday comforting Mr O'Brien's wife, Kelly, who was seriously injured after she reportedly jumped from a bedroom window of the house in Killeen Heights at around 2am yesterday.
Nadine was the couple's only child, and the tragic deaths are said to have shocked the town.
Fr Padraig Walsh from Our Lady and St Brendan's Parish said Mr O'Brien was from Tralee and that both his and his wife's family were in deep shock at the hospital yesterday.
Mayor of Tralee Grace O'Donnell said the people of Tralee would give the family as much support as possible.
"We're just so devastated and our sympathies go out to the family," she said.
"Where this family was living is a wonderful community and I'm sure they'll be there for the family.
"The people of Tralee will be there to help in whatever way we can," Ms O'Donnell added.
Gardai said initial indications were that the fire started accidentally although a forensic examination had still to be completed yesterday evening.
The fire in the family home was seen just after 2am with emergency services arriving at the scene at 2.20am.
But it was already too late to rescue the father and daughter who were trapped inside the blazing residence.
Fr Walsh said he had spoken to the families and that Ms O'Brien was seriously injured but it was hoped she would recover.
She is being treated at Tralee General Hospital.
