A FATHER who was killed during a hit-and-run incident, just 100 metres from his home, was enjoying two weeks' holidays from work.
Tomas Nowakowski (38) died after he was struck down by a car while walking near his home in Ennis, Co Clare, on Wednesday night.
A woman, aged in her 30s, presented herself to investigating gardai yesterday and has made a detailed statement concerning the incident.
After the woman came forward, officers from Ennis garda station also took possession of an Opel Zafira which they believe was the vehicle used in the hit and run incident.
The car was being forensically examined last night.
Gardai are fully examining what the woman told them during an interview.
The full circumstances of the incident have not yet been fully established.
Mr Nowakowski, a Polish national, was 100 metres from his home along the Tobarteascain road – on the outskirts of Ennis – when the incident occurred shortly after 10pm.
Emergency services were alerted but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Attempts were being made last night to contact his wife, Patrycja, who returned home to Poland recently for a brief holiday. The couple have one daughter, Oliwia who is 18 months old.
The parents have been resident in Ireland for at least six years and lived at a rented house in Tobar Beg.
Mr Nowakowski worked in Hillbilly's restaurant in Ennis but was on a fortnight's holidays.
Friends gathered together last night and bouquets of flowers were placed at the spot where he died.
"We are absolutely stunned, shocked and saddened," a close friend said.
A man who wished to be called Karol worked with Mr Nowakowski in Hillbilly's. "He was a very hard worker. He was based in the kitchen and generally did the night shift from 6pm to 1am," Karol said. "I had to identify his body in the hospital."
The garda investigation into the incident is continuing.
One resident who lived near where the hit and run occurred said she was inside her home and heard a bang.
"He was just lying here on the side of the road," she said.
"It is very sad. I couldn't sleep after it happened last night."
