Cyclist killed in early morning collision

A CYCLIST in his 50s has been killed following an early-morning collision.

Gardaí in Dundalk are appealing for witnesses following the incident in Blackrock, Co Louth.

"Shortly before 7am Gardaí and Emergency Services were called to the scene of an incident involving a male cyclist at Birch’s Lane, Blackrock," a garda spokesman said. 

"The man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. His body was removed to Louth County Hospital for a post-mortem examination and the local Coroner has been notified."

Garda forensic collision investigators have been requested to attend and examine the scene. The road is currently closed to traffic and local traffic diversions are in place.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have travelled on Birch’s Lane between 4am and 7am to contact them at Dundalk Garda Station 049-9388400 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
