An elderly cyclist has been killed in a collision with a car driver who was arrested for suspected drink-driving in Co Kildare

The man, aged in his 80s, was struck by the vehicle on the Dublin Road, Clane, this afternoon. The driver, aged in his 20s, has been detained at Naas Garda Station.

A post-mortem examination is to take place.

The man arrested was released without charge this evening and a file is now being prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The stretch of road has now reopened.
