Customers flee shopping centre blaze

BANK holiday shoppers were forced to evacuate a busy shopping centre after a fire broke out in a storage shed nearby.

A number of cars were damaged in the blaze which broke out in a shed at a row of houses near the shopping centre on Grand Parade, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The fire quickly spread and led to a loud explosion.

Shoppers at the busy centre, which includes retailers Penneys and Marks & Spencer, were evacuated from the building, but a Penneys' spokesperson said none of the shops were damaged and customers were allowed to return after about two hours.

The scene was sealed off for a forensic examination.
