Custody death probed

INVESTIGATORS believe the death of a man in garda custody was not suspicious.

Michael Lynch (63) was detained by officers in Buncrana, Co Donegal, at around 2am yesterday. The Office of the Garda Ombudsman investigated the death and it is believed Mr Lynch died of a heart attack.


FORMAL talks aimed at resolving the secondary teachers' dispute open today.

Industrial action by the 17,000-member ASTI includes a ban on meetings outside school hours. A Department of Education spokesperson said the discussions are being held with a view to the ASTI re-balloting its members.


TRIBUTES have been paid to the former SDLP MP Eddie McGrady, who has died aged 78. Mr McGrady, who had been ill for some time, defeated Ulster Unionist Enoch Powell to win the South Down seat at the fourth attempt in 1987.


GARDAI have arrested a 20-year-old man following the discovery of a cannabis grow house in Birr, Co Offaly. They found 260 cannabis plants worth about €200,000.
