A spectacular New Year's Eve party with fireworks and a majestic 'Procession of Light' will kickstart the year with a flourish.

More than 200 different performances and exhibitions have been lined up as part of a €6m programme that hopes to attract one million visitors.

One of the city's leading sons, Finance Minister Michael Noonan, has described the designation of the 'Treaty City' as National City of Culture as a "key part of the rebranding of Limerick".

The 20th anniversary world tour of Riverdance will form the centrepiece of events from January 16-19, while a film festival in honour of Limerick native Richard Harris will be another of the highlights of the year.
