Crowds flock to scarecrow fun festival

A VILLAGE is hosting a couple of athletes that are going nowhere fast.

Synchronised swimmers and fishing enthusiasts stuffed with straw are among the creations lining the streets of the Laois town of Durrow for this year's All-Ireland Scarecrow Festival.

More than 120 scarecrows -- including one of Homer Simpson -- will decorate the village until Monday week.

Organiser Pat Moore said this is the first All-Ireland Scarecrow Championship, as the event used to be part of the 'Howya Festival'.

It has attracted thousands of visitors to the picturesque village since it began a few years ago.

"Some of the scarecrows are hilarious," said Mr Moore.
