Criminal stabs his ex-ally after hearing of girlfriend's affair

Barry Duggan

A WELL-known criminal stabbed a former ally in broad daylight and trashed his home after he found out that his girlfriend had been having an affair with him.

There were violent scenes on the northside of Limerick city this week after former criminal associates turned on each other.

The Irish Independent understands that a man, aged in his early 20s who is a well-known criminal figure, attacked another man after he discovered that his girlfriend was "involved romantically" with him.

Prior to this week's violent attack in the Delmege Park area of Moyross, the criminal trashed the Limerick apartment where his intended target lived after finding out about the affair.

At around 4.30pm on Tuesday, there were violent scenes in the northside estate as the pair fought with many people watching.

The wounded man suffered a severe stab wound and was brought to hospital to be treated for his injuries where he remained yesterday.

His assailant has numerous criminal convictions dating back to his teenage years and he has been in and out of prison ever since.

The injured man has previously served a lengthy jail sentence for his role in a drive-by shooting in Limerick when members of the Keane criminal gang were targeted by gunmen.

Before moving to his apartment near the city centre, he lived in the same estate as his assailant.

He also narrowly survived several attempts on his life five years ago.

It is understood that no complaint was made to gardai about the violence.

Tensions in the Moyross estate are said to be palpable following the incident and there are fears that the violence could escalate.

Both men are former associates of convicted drug dealer 'Fat' John McCarthy who is currently locked behind bars.

Earlier this year, McCarthy, from Moyross, was jailed for 14 years for leading a heroin bagging operation on the outskirts of the city.
