GARDAÍ have launched a criminal investigation following the death of a young man in unexplained circumstances in Cork at the weekend.

The man who died has been named locally as Colm Casey from Keel in Macroom.

He was found unconscious at a residence in Eagle Valley in Wilton on the southside of Cork city shortly after 1am on Saturday.

Paramedics were called to the scene and Mr Casey was rushed to Cork University Hospital. However, he was later pronounced dead.

Mr Casey, who was a past pupil of De La Salle College in Macroom, was in the company of several of his friends.

The scene in Eagle Valley was forensically examined and a post-mortem examination carried out. The results were not released for operational reasons.

Gardaí confirmed in a statement that the "criminal investigation into this matter is ongoing".

The local priest in Macroom, Fr John Keane, said that there were "no words" for the tragedy suffered by the Casey family. "It is shocking. There are no words for it at all. In any circumstances, it is not right for a family to bury a son or daughter," Fr Keane said.

"When I go to the family, there is nothing I can say only be as compassionate as I can be. We will walk with them and support them."

Local Fine Gael councillor Ted Lucey extended his condolences to the Casey family on the tragic loss.

"I knew Colm through Macroom GAA. He was a nice footballer and quiet boy. I feel very sorry for his family and friends. He was a good footballer. He played quite a bit of underage football," he said.

Macroom Fine Gael councillor Michael Creed said it was "devastating" for the family of "a very nice young fella".
