"All we can describe whoever done this as thugs to attack an elderly couple."

He said: "It's truly horrific and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area last night who might have any information to contact Gardai.

"The details are quite scant but we know that two men entered their home late last night and unfortunately Jimmy is in hospital in Portlaoise at the moment and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

"I believe he's doing well, I was talking to one of his family and it seems like such a difficult attack that an elderly couple were faced with this.
