It appears from initial investigations that a lone gunman fired a number of shots through a rear kitchen window of a house injuring the man.

The gunman then left the scene in a car.

Mr Cooper lives in the house with his partner Linda, their two daughters and another daughter from his partner's previous relationship.

Locals told Independent.ie they are in shock and described Mr Cooper as "a helpful" neighbor and someone who kept to himself.

One man reported seeing Mr Cooper looking upset earlier in the day on Monday.

"I was driving home and I passed him on the street. I saw he was walking towards his car.

"It struck me that he didn't look right. He looked upset. It was like he knew something was going to happen," the man said.

"It was at around 2pm and later last night, my wife told me about what happened.

"He's a good neighbor, a helpful neighbor. He would call in and offer to help with work in the house sometimes," he added.

Another woman described hearing the shots.

"I was in the house and I heard the shots. At first I thought they were bangers or fireworks for Christmas.  I heard six or seven bangs.

"We are all just in shock here. We know Charlie and Linda quite well.

"They've been living here a long time with their two girls and she has another daughter too," the woman said.

Garda forensic investigators returned to the scene for a second day today, while the house remained sealed off.

Small traces of blood could be seen on the ground.

The incident occurred shortly after 8.20pm last night and Mr Cooper was treated at the scene by Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics.

It is understood he responded to medical staff when initially treated before being transferred to Connolly Memorial hospital.

He was last night being treated for gunshot wounds and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Officers from Blanchardstown Garda Station are investigating the shooting.

No arrests have been made and gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
