Man charged after attempting to rob bookmakers in 'Rubberbandits'-style disguise

A man has been charged with attempted robbery after a Co Louth betting shop was targeted by a raider yesterday evening.

Norman Rowan (46), from Tinure in Dunleer, was arrested after the incident at the Bar One bookmakers on Main Street in Dunleer at 5.30pm on Wednesday evening.

He appeared before judge John Coughlan at Dundalk District Court today.

He was released on bail with conditions to appear at Drogheda District Court on January 12 next for Director of Public Prosecutions directions and jurisdiction.

During the attempted robbery a lone man whose head was covered with a plastic bag with holes cut out for the eyes entered the betting shop and threatened staff but left empty handed a short time later.

The alarm was raised and gardai with the assistance of the Regional Support Unit responded and made the arrest
