A 25-year-old Irish woman who was savagely beaten by three men in France is believed to have been the victim of a mugging.

Aislin Noone was walking back to her apartment in Avignon at around 7am on Saturday when she was attacked.

She was hospitalised following the incident and suffered serious injuries to her mouth, cheeks and nose, police said.

Ms Noone later realised her handbag was missing, leading police to believe the attack was part of a robbery.

Initial reports indicated she was hit with a motorcycle chain, but the town prosecutor said she was actually punched repeatedly in the head by all three of her attackers.

“She doesn't have a very clear memory of the assault as it was very fast and violent and she was so shocked,” he told the Mirror.

The prosecutor added that she saw one of the men with a chain before falling to the ground and becoming unconscious.

He said that although Ms Noone didn’t see the men taking her bag, its absence suggests robbery was the motive in the attack.

However, the bag contained only an old mobile phone and a credit card.

The attack took place after Ms Noone had been socialising with friends on the last night of the annual festival of Avignon.

She is believed to have been living in the town for several months.
