A GARDA dog has been hailed as a hero for helping locate a car jacker who left a 40 year old woman in Cork traumatised after he attempted to steal her car at knife point.

Tributes have been paid to Garda dog 'Lazar' who was able to locate the suspect who had fled the scene and was hiding in a ditch.

The incident occurred at 11.10pm on Tuesday in Douglas on Cork's southside.

It is understood the woman had stopped her vehicle at traffic lights as she was driving home when suddenly she was approached by a male.

He was armed with a knife and ordered her out of the vehicle.

However, the lights suddenly changed and, with passing traffic, the man panicked before he could get into the car.

He fled the scene on foot.

The shocked woman was able to raise the alarm - and she was comforted by pedestrians and passing motorists who came to her aid.

She was unharmed in the incident but was deeply shocked.

Gardaí were on the scene within minutes and, thanks to Garda dog Lazar, were able to locate and arrest the suspect who was found hiding in a ditch in the Willow Park area.

He was detained after a short struggle.

The 25 year old man was arrested and is currently being questioned at Togher Garda Station.

"This was a nasty type of incident and left the female motorist involved very upset," a Garda source said.

"Great credit it due to the members involved who were at the scene so quickly and to Garda dog Lazar for leading his handlers directly to the suspect."

The man is expected to appear before a sitting of Cork City District Court on Thursday morning charged in connection with the case.
