Armed raider arrested after trying to rob store without realising detectives were inside
A known criminal has been arrested after he robbed a store where detectives happened to be scanning CCTV at the time.
Independent.ie has learned that the man, aged in his 20s, entered a Centra Store on Coultry Road in Ballymun shortly after 7pm yesterday brandishing what appeared to be a firearm.
The raider threatened staff and demanded that they hand over cash.
He fled the store moments later with a sum of money, believed to be around €800.
Unlucky for the criminal, two members of the local detective unit happened to be in a back office in the store at the time reviewing CCTV of a previous incident.
The armed gardai spotted what was happening and gave chase.
A source said the suspect was pursued for a number of minutes and was later arrested in a garden shed where a sum of cash was recovered.
He has been arrested and is currently being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act in Ballymun garda station. He can be held for up to 24 hours.
No shots were fired during the incident and there were no reported injuries.
The man is well-known to gardaí and has a number of previous convictions.
A search is ongoing for the suspected firearm which was discarded during the chase.
