Crime gang flies in to prey on revellers
AT least 23 people were arrested after organised criminal gangs from Eastern Europe flew into the capital to prey on revellers over the bank holiday weekend.
Since Friday, gardai arrested scores of pickpockets, including one Romanian woman who was arrested for theft within an hour of arriving in Dublin on a flight from Eastern Europe.
"Another man was arrested within six hours of arriving and was found with six iPhones on him," a senior garda told the Irish Independent last night.
One of the suspects admitted flying into Dublin specifically to target tourists and revellers out celebrating St Patrick's Day.
The gangs had no trouble stealing iPhones, wallets and other valuables, as well as targeting people at cashpoints and in nightclubs, pubs and late night fast-food venues. Yet despite the thefts most people were well-behaved. However, there were many instances of young revellers who started drinking early yesterday and up to 70 gardai on foot patrol in the capital last night were kept busy taking alcohol off people drinking in the streets.
There were many instances of young revellers who started drinking early yesterday who were the worse for wear by last night. "But they're all very good humoured and are mostly tourists," the garda added.
"But everything is going well and there is a good atmosphere."
