Creighton calls on Labour to lobby German ‘comrades’

Fionnan Sheahan in Brussels

LUCINDA Creighton has called on Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore to lobby the Labour Party's sister party in Germany over Ireland's corporation tax rate and bank debt deal.

The former European Affairs Minister is in Brussels attending a meeting of Fine Gael's grouping in the EU, the European People's Party.

Ms Creighton is attending a meeting, where Taoiseach Enda Kenny and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will also be present, ahead of an EU summit.

The Dublin South-East TD is supporting Mr Kenny's initiative in lobbying EU leaders on Ireland's legacy debt.

But Ms Creighton says she is concerned about noises coming from the German socialists about Ireland's corporate tax rate featuring in the coalition government negotiations.

She says Mr Gilmore and Labour need to use their influence with their German counterparts, the SDP, and "call on their comrades to show solidarity".
