Cowen's brother insists Brian 'is his own man' despite Ahern legacy

The brother of the Tánaiste has hinted that Brian Cowen will be a different style of Taoiseach to Bertie Ahern.

Offaly Councillor Barry Cowen said his brother has learned a lot from the Taoiseach, but he added, 'He is obviously his own man as well and he will carry out the duties of Taoiseach as he sees fit.'

Minister Cowen is set to be the only candidate for the leadership of Fianna Fáil when nominations close at two o'clock this afternoon.

He was nominated for the post by Justice Minister Brian Lenihan and backed by Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan.
