Coveney 'is making rich farmers richer' – O Cuiv
AGRICULTURE Minister Simon Coveney has been accused of trying to make rich farmers richer in the current overhaul of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
Fianna Fail farm spokesman Eamon O Cuiv criticised current CAP reform proposals being pushed by Mr Coveney which aim to limit redistribution of EU grants between farmers.
"All you are doing is preserving the rich and making them richer," he said at the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee yesterday.
But in a testy exchange, Mr Coveney said Mr O Cuiv was "talking rubbish" as a bigger redistribution of funds would undermine official expansion targets for Irish food production signed off on by Fianna Fail in the last government.
He also told TDs to "get real" about the possibility of limiting EU farm payments to a a maximum of €35,000 per farmer.
Mr Coveney said there were EU proposals to limit payments to a maximum of between €150,000 and €300,000.
