A Bulgarian truck driver has admitted careless driving causing the death of a young Irishman.

Ivan Gochev (40) c/o Walton's Transport, Kilkenny pleaded guilty before Cork Circuit Criminal Court to a single charge arising from an accident last year.

Gochev admitted careless driving causing the death of Brian Fahy (24) at Lisnacunna, Enniskeane in west Cork on May 25 2016 contrary to Section 52 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961.

The collision involved the truck being driven by the defendant and a car travelling in the opposite direction with two occupants.

Mr Fahy, who was from South Douglas Road in Cork city, was a front seat passenger in the car.

The young man suffered multiple injuries in the collision and tragically died despite desperate efforts to save him at the scene.

The young man was engaged and due to get married.

Judge Gerard O'Brien agreed to adjourn the matter for sentencing to allow for the preparation of various expert reports.

Donal O'Sullivan BL, for the State, said there was no objection to the defendant being remanded on continuing bail.

Judge O'Brien adjourned the matter for sentencing to Thursday November 23 next.
