Niamh O'Donoghue

The trial of a retired member of the defence forces accused of murdering a woman in the town four years ago has been adjourned.

Jimmy Devaney (66) of Millbrook Avenue, Monksland, Athlone has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to murdering Marie Greene in Westmeath on February 13, 2011.

On Monday a jury of six men and six women was sworn in for the trial which was due to start today.

But Ms Justice Margaret Heneghan told the jury she was not in a position to start to trial because there is another trial at hearing.

The judge said Mr Devaney's trial would start tomorrow and would take about two weeks.
