Three siblings get €56,000 for whiplash crash injuries

THREE children, who suffered whiplash when their family car was rear-ended, yesterday settled for a total of €56,000 for their injuries.

Daniel Hopkins (10), his brother Thomas (7) and their sister Rachael (9) from Clonuff, Broadford, Co Kildare, each suffered neck injuries when the car driven by their mother Jennifer was struck from behind.

Circuit Court President Justice Matthew Deery heard that the accident happened on the Enfield by-pass in January 2007.

Counsel for the children, who sued through their father Thomas, told the court that all of the children had suffered whiplash.

The children had received treatment from their general practitioner and a consultant for recurrent and protracted symptoms, which had been more problematical for Daniel and Thomas.

Judge Deery approved settlement offers made on behalf of the defendant motorist, Ms Monica Carney of Dodsboro Road, Lucan, Co Dublin.

Daniel and Thomas were each given €20,000 and Rachael got €16,000, which will remain invested in court funds until they are 18 years of age.
