A THIEF stole €10,000 from a car with children inside it while their mother dropped one of them off to school.

Michael McDonald (42) is beginning a prison sentence having been found guilty of theft at a previous sitting of Wexford Circuit Court.

The court heard that €10,000 was stolen from nurse Siobhan Donovan who had left her handbag in her car while dropping a child off from school on November 27, 2007.

Two of Ms Donovan's three children remained in the car, and on her return they were upset and the money gone.

McDonald, of Clonee, Co Meath, was later arrested.

The court heard that none of the money, which was taken out as a loan by Ms Donovan to buy a car, was recovered.

Judge Barry Hickson said he had no option but to impose a custodial sentence.

He sentenced McDonald to three-and-a-half years, with the final 12 months of the sentence suspended.
