Thief caught after stealing car fitted with tracking device
A serial thief will be sentenced later after he stole a rental car which, unknown to him, had been fitted with a tracking device.
Alan McDonagh (33) was caught by gardaí driving a Europcar vehicle which he had stolen a short time earlier from Dublin city centre.
He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to burglary and unauthorised taking of a car at Camden Street Upper on September 8, 2017.
Under a separate bill, he admitted robbing a young woman of her purse and its contents at St Stephen's Green East, Dublin 2, on November 3, 2017.
Judge Melanie Greally adjourned sentencing until February to allow McDonagh time to come fully off methadone. The court heard McDonagh has spent over half his life in custody.
McDonagh, of Market Mews, Maryborough village, Portlaoise, Co Laois, has 173 previous convictions.
Counsel for McDonagh cited a probation report describing him as having a "disarming, self-deprecating sense of humour" and a "particular charisma".
Garda David Corcoran told Noel Devitt BL, prosecuting, that neither victim had wished to make a victim impact statement.
