Teen knocked Garda down flight of stairs while resisting drug search

A DUBLIN youth, who knocked a garda down a flight of stairs while resisting a drug search, has been remanded on bail pending sentencing.

The 17-year-old has admitted obstructing a garda, breach of the peace and possessing an amount of cannabis for his own use, near his north Dublin home, on June 30 last year.

He has also pleaded guilty to unlawfully getting into a vehicle at Carnew Street, Dublin 7 on August 21 last.

The Dublin Children's Court had heard that he said “I'll fucking destroy you” when he was about to be searched by Garda John Morrison. The two rolled down a flat complex stairwell and the garda's radio was ripped from him.

The teenager is currently awaiting sentencing in the Circuit Court in relation to a serious assault and that case is to be finalised in July.

The juvenile court has already heard that the boy had “huge emotional problems” and had also been placed by the HSE in a special care facility for a period.

Defence solicitor Gareth Noble said the youth's has continued to co-operate with the Probation Service and that will help reduce the risk of him re-offending.

Judge John O'Connor ordered the boy, who was accompanied to his hearing by his mother, to appear again next month. He said the youth had to show commitment and “it is very much in his hands as to what is going to happen”.
