Teen charged with murdering mother

Brian McDonald

A teenager appeared in court yesterday charged with murdering his mother.

Celyn Eadon (19) stood silently, with his head bowed, for the brief hearing at Swinford District Court.

He is charged with the murder of his mother, Noreen Kelly (46), at their home in Derrycrieve, Islandeady, Castlebar, Co Mayo, last Wednesday, March 9.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Ms Kelly died from multiple stab wounds.

Detective Sergeant James Carroll gave evidence of arresting Mr Eadon on Thursday night. He had made no reply when the charge was put to him, the sergeant told the court.

Defence solicitor Aidan Crowley said he was consenting an application for a remand in custody.

Mr Crowley asked Judge Mary Devins to request an immediate psychiatric assessment for his client in Castlerea Prison.

He told the court he saw a progressive deterioration in the state of Mr Eadon's mental health and it was obvious he was now in need of medical attention.

Sgt Carroll told the court that the accused youth was seen by a GP after his arrest and was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar. He was deemed fit to be interviewed.

Remanding him in custody to Harristown Court in Co Roscommon next Friday, the judge directed that he be medically assessed and provided with appropriate treatment. He approved an application for legal aid.
