A TEENAGER has been charged in connection with the glassing of an Irish emigrant who was holidaying here, which left her blind in her right eye.

Gary Ward (19), of Scurragh, Birr, Co Offaly, was before Birr District Court yesterday charged with a section three assault of Marie Wrafter Gauvin, at Keel's Archway, Birr, on August 4, 2013.

Last month, Ms Gauvin (58) returned home to Birr for a family holiday after emigrating to Canada with her family 47 years ago.

She was struck in her right eye during an incident on the street while taking part in a Gathering event.

Inspector Declan Dunne told Birr District Court that the victim had suffered an injury to her eye, which may result in the loss of her eye. She has already lost the sight in the eye.

She also sustained a fracture and received 32 stitches around her eye.

Judge Catherine Staines heard that Mr Ward is alleged to have thrown a glass object that caused these injuries.

She remanded him to appear again on continuing bail with conditions before Birr District Court on November 12, 2013.
