Step-dad jailed for daily sex abuse of girl (10)

A man who sexually assaulted his 10-year-old step-daughter on a near-daily basis while forcing her to watch internet porn has been jailed for nine years.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, abused the child more than 100 times over a long period.

The 41-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault of a female at addresses in Dublin between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2008.

Detective Garda Michael Fitzgerald said that the abuse began when the girl was writing lines as a punishment from school and the man went to her and exposed himself.

The court heard the abuse continued on a near daily basis.

On one occasion the victim was asleep in the same room as her younger sister and woke up as the man was carrying her downstairs. He was half naked and he made her rock up and down on him.

The court heard that he then abused her and forced her to watch porn on his laptop.

The accused hit the girl if she didn't go to him at night and once caused her mouth to bleed.

In May 2009 the man tried to touch her again but she pushed him away and told him it had to stop and that it was sick.

He then said he was sorry, but later on he sent her an anonymous text telling her to wear shorter skirts and tighter tops.

The victim told her mother about the abuse in late 2011 and "all hell broke loose".

Gardai were called and found the man had barricaded himself in a bathroom.

They escorted him out of the house and he immediately began confessing to the abuse.

He told gardai: "I'm deeply ashamed of what I've done. I am sick. I wish I could get some sort of help".

The accused's previous convictions include one for unlawful carnal knowledge of a 16-year-old girl in 2001.

In a victim impact statement the girl, now aged 17, said her step-father had ruined her life and the abuse still haunts her.

The court heard that the man was a child himself when his sister was killed by his parents while living in another country.

Patrick Marrinan SC said his client was deeply remorseful and was eager to get treatment.

Judge Martin Nolan said that the figure of over 100 times that he had abused the girl was a conservative estimate. He imposed consecutive sentences of four years and five years for two of the sample charges.

He refused a request by the defence to seek leave to appeal the severity of the sentence.
