RTE's new comedy show 'Damo and Ivor' faces a legal challenge before it even airs, as a singer-songwriter claims he has trademarked the name 'Damo' for entertainment purposes.

Damien O'Regan is suing the national broadcaster and comedian Andy Quirke for alleged copyright infringement over their use of the name 'Damo' in the forthcoming TV show.

The new RTE2 series, due to air on Monday, features two characters who are both played by Mr Quirke.

Mr Justice Brian McGovern granted lawyers for Mr O'Regan short service to ask the court on Friday for an injunction restraining both Mr Quirke and RTE from infringing his trademark.

The characters of Damo and Ivor first appeared on RTE's 'The Republic of Telly' in 2011.
