A 31-YEAR-OLD man appeared in court today charged with assaulting and causing serious harm to his mother at her Kilkenny home last Friday.

Siobhan Stapleton (51) died while being transferred from Kilkenny to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.



The mother-of-five was found with head injuries in the yard of her family home in Kilfane.



Today her son Niall Stapleton of Kilfane, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny was brought before a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court.



He was arrested on Tuesday night after her funeral.



There was no application of bail and he was remanded in custody to next Tuesday.



His father Peter and other family members attended the court hearing.



Judge Gerard Furlong directed that all appropriate psychological and medical treatment be given to the accused in custody.
