'Slavery' worry for Romanian girl brought here
AN arrangement where the parents of a girl (17) from Romania let a man bring her to Ireland where she was arrested "sounds like slavery", a judge said.
Three days after arriving in Ireland with the 23-year-old man, who claims to be her fiance, the teen was arrested for stealing €296 worth of cosmetics from a shop in Dublin.
The girl was arrested on Tuesday and was held in a garda station overnight. On Wednesday, she was remanded in custody by Dublin Children's Court.
Yesterday, the man came to court with a document, which stated the teen's parents had given him "power of attorney".
"It sounds like slavery to me," said Judge Joseph O'Connor.
After the girl pleaded guilty, she was released and ordered to appear again next week.
