Sentence delay for guard in car insurance scam
A GARDA convicted of insurance fraud will be sentenced next week at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
A jury had found Garda Paul Fogarty (28), who is based at Dundrum, guilty of fraud following a dispute over repairs to Fogarty's Toyota Celica. Fogarty, who had his sentence hearing adjourned yesterday, had denied inducing Quinn Direct by deception to pay a €10,254 insurance claim at Littlepace, Clonee, Co Meath.
In April 2009, Fogarty submitted a claim to Quinn Direct stating the car had been stolen and it had been "in perfect condition".
This, according to Melanie Greally, prosecuting, was the "crux of the charge" of fraud.
Fogarty later admitted during garda interviews the car had been involved in a crash.
