Moldovan charged with illegal importation of cigarettes
A Moldovan man has been remanded in custody charged with the illegal importation of cigarettes.
It followed a seizure by Revenue officers of 28,000 cigarettes in Dublin Airport last Saturday when the 35-year-old Moldovan man arrived on a flight from Moldova via Frankfurt.
The 'Marlboro Gold' cigarettes were packed into two suitcases and the man was arrested and later brought before Judge John Coughlan in the Criminal Courts of Justice charged with the illegal importation of cigarettes.
He was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court yesterday where Judge Conal Gibbons further remanded him in further custody until January 6 next.
Revenue said in a statement that the cigarettes had a retail value to €14,700 and represented a possible loss to the exchequer of approximately €11,700.
This is assuming that they would have displaced the equivalent full-tax-paid quantity of cigarettes.
