Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald paid a warm tribute to Jonathan Dowdall in September 2014, when he stepped down from his role as an elected councillor for the party in Dublin's North Inner City - even saying she would miss him in his elected role.

The text of her tribute was as follows:

"It is with much regret that we accept Jonathan's decision to step down. I fully accept his decision and the reasons behind it.

"Jonathan is a very popular and respected member of his community and he will be missed in his elected role by me, the local party organisation and by local constituents.

"I want to thank Jonathan for all his hard work for the party and for the local community. I wish him, his wife Trish and his family all the best and look forward to working with him in the future.

"I would ask to the media to respect Jonathan and his family's privacy at this time."
